It might seem odd that evaporator coils can become frozen when the outside temperature is 95 degrees or hotter, but a frozen coil is a common issue during the hot summer months. There are several possible causes of a frozen evaporator coil.
One prevailing cause is when poorly circulated air passes by the coil, provoking the temperature to fall under 32 degrees. The humidity on the coil freezes, leading to a malfunctioning or completely inoperative air conditioner unit.
Frozen coils may also be a result of low refrigerant or Freon or a used filter. You can do a visual inspection of the filter to find out whether it may be the culprit. If the filter is dirty, then it may be limiting airflow; if it is wet, then water is dripping off of the coil and missing the drain pan.
What Should You Do if You Have a Frozen Evaporator Coil?
Turn off the air conditioning and call Precision Heating & Air at 512-387-3725 to schedule an appointment with an expert!
Though the prospect of turning off your AC in the middle of a heatwave can be intimidating, it may ultimately save the evaporator coil. It can take as long as eight hours for the coil to thaw, so the quicker the system is shut down, the sooner the problem can be removed. The fan can and should remain on to generate airflow. This also keeps your home cooler and speeds up the defrosting process. As the coil thaws, condensation will be created, so towels will be useful to soak up the water and avoid damage.
If you think your system’s evaporator coil might be frozen, call Precision Heating & Air at (512) 488-1120 to arrange an appointment. We will assign a technician to inspect the unit as soon as we can.
